What do I actually gain from insurance? The side that is not about fear
Not every question is a fear. Many are hopes: to protect my family properly, to leave something for the grandchildren, to take a positive risk. What good cover gives, with honest figures and no invented stories.

In short
What good cover really gives is time and choices, so decisions are not made under pressure. When the worst case is covered, you can take life’s positive risks more calmly.
- Write on one page whom you want to protect, and from what.
- Make a family folder with the policies and key documents, and tell someone you trust where it is.
- Set a fixed monthly amount for protection in your budget.
- Do a small family “financial check-up” once a year.
From the series “The questions you are afraid to ask”: questions real people ask, with honest answers.
At a glance
- What good cover really gives is time and choices, so decisions are not made under pressure.
- In 2024 life insurers in Cyprus recorded about €287 million in gross claims and benefits (Insurance Association of Cyprus data).
- We will publish real stories only with the families’ consent; we invent nothing.
- When the worst case is covered, you can take life’s positive risks more calmly.
Questions that are hopes
In this series we talk a lot about fears. But many of the questions we hear are full of hope: “I want to protect my family properly, where do I start?” “My parents protected me, I want to do the same for my children.” “I want to start a business without putting the home at risk.” This article is for those.
What good cover gives, in practice
- Time: for a family to grieve, or a person to recover, without immediate money pressure.
- The home: cover that follows the loan can pay it off.
- The children’s plans: school, studies and activities carry on.
- Choices: decisions made calmly, not out of necessity.
- Freedom: to change jobs or invest in yourself, knowing the basics are covered.
Honest figures
In 2024 life insurers in Cyprus recorded about €287 million in gross claims and benefits, according to Insurance Association of Cyprus data. The figure includes maturities and surrenders, not only death claims. Cyprus does not publish a claims acceptance rate; for a sense of scale, in the United Kingdom (not Cyprus) 96.9% of new individual protection claims were paid in 2024.
We will not tell you stories we cannot verify. Real family stories will be published only anonymously and with their consent.
Good habits of well-organised families
- They know which policies they hold, and so does one trusted person.
- They keep the documents in one folder that is easy to find.
- They have an emergency fund for small knocks.
- They check beneficiaries after every big change.
- They do a small “financial check-up” once a year.
Your questions, one by one
What exactly does life insurance give my family?
Money when it is most needed: to replace your income, pay off loans, keep the children’s plans going and cover the first costs. What it really gives is time and choices, so decisions are not made under pressure. The amount and terms depend on the policy.
I want to protect my family properly. Where do I start?
With three questions: who depends on me, what would they need, and what do I already have? Then an emergency fund, income and life protection, health cover, beneficiaries, and a folder your family can find. The family protection roadmap takes you through it step by step.
Can insurance help me build something for my children’s future?
Yes, with regular saving over many years: through a savings plan, an investment-linked policy or other savings. Each has costs and, if invested, risk; past returns are not a promise. What suits you is for a licensed advisor to assess.
What are the real stories of families helped by insurance?
We will publish only real stories, with the families’ consent, and we will not invent any. For a sense of scale: in 2024 life insurers in Cyprus recorded about €287 million in gross claims and benefits (Insurance Association of Cyprus data, including maturities and surrenders).
I just got married — what should we set up together?
Talk openly about money, write down incomes and debts, check the beneficiaries on existing policies (they may still name your parents), consider cover if you take a loan, and keep the important documents in one place.
How does insurance fit into a family budget plan?
See protection as a fixed monthly cost, like rent, sized to what you can keep up for years. You can start with a small, essential cover and add to it as income grows. The monthly budget helps you find the amount.
I want to leave something for my grandchildren. How?
A savings plan for a grandchild, with you as policyholder, or life cover naming the grandchildren as beneficiaries, are common ways. Think about who is policyholder, insured and beneficiary, and what happens if you are no longer there to pay.
Can insurance pay for the best treatment if I get seriously ill?
Private health cover or critical illness cover can give choices (doctors, hospitals, sometimes abroad) and money when you need it, within the policy’s limits and definitions. It cannot guarantee a treatment’s availability or outcome. Check limits, networks and exclusions.
I want to understand insurance properly, not just buy it. Where can I learn?
Right here: our guides, the glossary (Greek, English, Russian) and the “Things worth knowing” articles explain policies in plain words. And whenever you are offered something, put your questions in writing.
What’s the biggest benefit people feel after buying cover?
We have no survey to quote. What cover is designed to give is calm: knowing that, if something happens, your family will not have money worries on top of the loss.
Can a savings policy also give life cover at the same time?
Yes, many savings policies include life cover: on death during the term a benefit is paid. Check how large the cover is compared with the savings and what it costs; pure protection plus separate saving is an alternative to compare.
I’m starting a business — what protection should I think about?
Think of your own income if you cannot work, partner and key person protection if you have partners, and an emergency fund, which matters even more when income is irregular. For the business’s general covers (liability, premises), talk to a general-business intermediary.
Can private health cover give me faster diagnosis?
Private cover often gives faster access to private doctors and tests, alongside GESY, within its limits. The WHO Observatory reports waiting lists in GESY in some areas, such as palliative and rehabilitation care. Check what your plan covers and whether it has waiting periods.
Can insurance help keep my family in our home if I’m gone?
Yes, it is one of the clearest uses: cover that follows the loan balance can pay it off, and life cover can help with the other costs of the home. Check whether the loan already has cover and whom it pays.
Is it a good gift to start a policy for a newborn?
It can be a meaningful gift, for example a savings plan for the child’s future. Talk to the parents first, be clear about policyholder and beneficiary, and choose an amount you can keep up for years.
How do I explain insurance simply to my teenage children?
Simply: “Insurance means many people share the cost of bad events, so no family has to carry it alone.” Show them an example from home and tell them why you pay for it. It is a lesson in saving and responsibility.
I want to feel secure enough to take positive risks in life. Can insurance help?
Yes, it is one of its quieter benefits: when the worst case is covered, you change jobs, start a business or invest in yourself more calmly. It does not remove the risk, but it limits how far you can fall.
My parents protected me — I want to do the same for my kids.
That is a beautiful reason. Start where they did: what your children would need if you were not there, and what you already have. A small, well-chosen step today carries on what your parents gave you.
What you can do from today
- Write on one page whom you want to protect, and from what.
- Make a family folder with your policies and key documents.
- Set a fixed monthly amount for protection in your budget.
- Put a yearly family “financial check-up” in your calendar.
Every policy has its own terms. What we write here is general information, not advice; for your own case, what your policy says applies, and it is worth confirming it in writing with your insurer.
