Made redundant or laid off: what does the state give, for how long, and what about my cover and my loans?

Unemployment benefit in plain words: who qualifies, from day 4, for up to 156 days, how dependants change it, what applies to the self-employed, redundancy pay, and what happens to GESY, group schemes, life cover and loans.

In short

If you are an employee, the state pays unemployment benefit from the 4th day of unemployment, for up to 156 days; the self-employed are not entitled to it. Redundancy pay is something else, and before cutting any cover, ask what options you have.

  • Register as unemployed and apply for the benefit the same week.
  • Ask your employer in writing for the termination certificate and what happens to the group schemes and provident fund.
  • Write down your fixed monthly commitments and talk to the bank before you miss a payment.
  • Before cutting any policy, ask in writing for the alternatives and the cost of surrender.

From the series “The questions you are afraid to ask”, part “The Cyprus system”: questions real people ask, with honest answers.

At a glance

  • Unemployment benefit is paid to employees from the 4th day of unemployment, for up to 156 days in each period of unemployment.
  • The basic part is 60% of basic insurable earnings and rises to 80%, 90% or 100% with one, two or three dependants.
  • The self-employed are not entitled to unemployment benefit; for them, their own reserve is what counts.
  • Redundancy pay is a different thing from unemployment benefit; ask about its rules separately.
  • Before you cut any cover, ask what happens to your work group schemes and what options your own policy offers.

The first week after “unfortunately”

A redundancy, a business that closes, a contract that is not renewed. In the first days the thoughts race: will I get anything from the state? What about the loan? Should I stop the life cover to get through the month? There is no shame in asking all this, and you are not the only one. Here are the rules as we found them, with their sources, and an order in which to decide without rushing.

What the state gives

WhatThe rule
WhoEmployees aged 16 to 63, or up to 65 if not entitled to a pension. The self-employed are not entitled.
From whenFrom the 4th day of unemployment (from the 31st for people who worked abroad for a Cypriot employer).
For how longUp to 156 days in each period of unemployment.
How muchBasic 60% of the weekly basic insurable earnings; 80% with a dependent spouse, 90% with two dependants, 100% with three; plus 50% of supplementary insurable earnings.
Contribution conditionsAt least 0.50 insurance point of basic insurance and 26 weeks since insurance began, and at least 0.39 point in the relevant contribution year.
What is asked of youYou must be unemployed, able and available for work, and registered as a job seeker. ISSA mentions reporting every six weeks.
After 156 daysTo qualify again you need at least 26 weeks of work with contributions of at least 26 times the weekly basic insurable earnings (13 weeks if you are over 60 without an occupational pension).
Sources: a-kasser.dk (updated 2024, a summary of the official rules) and ISSA (rules as of 1 July 2023). We could not confirm the 2026 euro figure for basic insurable earnings, so we give no benefit amount.

For the self-employed: the summary of the official rules says plainly that they are not entitled to unemployment benefit, while ISSA describes them as “voluntarily covered only”. In practice, if your business closes, do not count on unemployment benefit; ask the Social Insurance Services whether anything applies in your case, and see the article Self-employed: if I stop, who pays?.

Redundancy pay: a different fund, different rules

Unemployment benefit replaces part of your income while you look for work. Redundancy pay is something else: it is linked to your years in the job and the reason the job ended. Employers pay a contribution to a redundancy fund together with their other contributions (INDEX.cy guide, 2026). Who qualifies, how much, and whether you can receive both at the same time we have not confirmed for this article. Ask the Social Insurance Services, your union or an employment lawyer in writing, before you sign any termination agreement.

What happens to GESY and to cover from work

  • GESY. According to the European Commission guide (July 2026), access depends on residence, not on paying contributions. If you are registered as a worker from a third country, ask the Health Insurance Organisation (17000) what applies when the work stops.
  • Group life and health schemes. They are usually tied to the job. We found no legal right in Cyprus to convert to an individual policy; some schemes offer it and others do not (an example from South Africa, not Cyprus). Ask HR before you leave whether a continuation option exists and until when.
  • Provident fund. What you take when you leave is set by your fund’s rules; see the article on provident funds.

Loans and insurance: an order to decide in

  • Talk to the bank early. Before you miss an instalment, not after. Ask for your options in writing.
  • If the loan has unemployment cover, read the terms. From when it pays, for how many months, and whether it excludes leaving voluntarily, fixed-term contracts or the self-employed. It is separate from the state benefit.
  • The mortgage life cover. The bank must accept a policy from another insurer if the cover is equivalent (Law 41(I)/2017, Article 12(4)). If the premium weighs on you, ask for a quote for the same cover, without leaving the loan uncovered for a single day.
  • Before you cut the life cover. Ask about a smaller sum insured, a break in the savings part, or a paid-up option. A surrender within 3 years adds to your income 30% of the premiums on which you had tax relief (20% in years 4 to 6). A cover cut today is bought again later at the age and health you will have then.

More on what to keep when the money does not stretch: I lost my job or I’m in debt: what do I keep? and If I stop paying, do I lose everything?. On loan insurance: The insurance the bank asks for.

What went wrong for others — and how to avoid it

  • Loan insurance sold as a package with the loan (EU, not Cyprus). EIOPA found that 83% of banks sold it tied to the loan, often with a single premium financed inside the loan, and that unused premium was not always refunded on early repayment. How to avoid it: ask whether the cover is required and whether you can bring your own; if you repay early, ask in writing for the refund.
  • Unemployment cover that did not cover the people paying for it (EU, not Cyprus). Waiting periods of up to a year, age limits and exclusions for the self-employed or people on fixed-term contracts, with 20% to 30% of claims refused. How to avoid it: before signing, ask for the terms (not only the leaflet) and read the job-loss section.

Your questions, one by one

I lost my job. How do I apply for unemployment benefit?

Register as a job seeker with the public employment services and apply for the benefit through the Social Insurance Services. The benefit is paid from the 4th day of unemployment, so do not let time pass. Ask for the list of documents needed in your case.

How long does unemployment benefit last in Cyprus?

Up to 156 days in each period of unemployment. To qualify again after that, you need at least 26 weeks of work with the required contributions (13 weeks if you are over 60 without an occupational pension).

My business closed. Can I get unemployment benefit as a self-employed person?

According to the summary of the official rules, the self-employed are not entitled to unemployment benefit; ISSA says they are covered only voluntarily. Ask the Social Insurance Services whether anything applies in your case, for example if you also had employed work. For the future, a reserve of a few months is your main protection.

How much unemployment benefit will I get with a wife and two kids?

The basic part is 60% of basic insurable earnings, 80% with a dependent spouse, 90% with two dependants and 100% with three, plus 50% of your supplementary insurable earnings. If your wife and both children count as dependants, the basic part reaches 100%. We could not confirm a 2026 euro amount; ask the Services for an estimate.

I resigned. Can I still get unemployment benefit?

The basic condition is that you are unemployed, able and available for work. Whether a resignation affects your entitlement we have not confirmed in our sources. Ask the Social Insurance Services in writing, ideally before you resign.

Can I work a few hours while on unemployment benefit?

We did not find the rule on part-time work while on the benefit. What we know is that you must be unemployed and available for work. Before you accept any work, ask the Services and declare it; undeclared work can cost you the benefit.

If I’m unemployed, do I lose GeSY?

According to the European Commission guide (July 2026), GESY access depends on residence, not on paying contributions. But if you are registered with GESY as a worker from a third country, your category is linked to the job. Confirm with the Health Insurance Organisation (17000).

My unemployment benefit ended after 156 days. Is there anything else?

For a new benefit you need at least 26 weeks of work with contributions. If the family income is not enough, there is the Guaranteed Minimum Income, with income and residence tests; we have not confirmed its 2026 amount. See the article on state support.

I worked in Greece before Cyprus. Do my Greek contributions count for unemployment benefit here?

Within the EU, insurance periods in other countries can be added together to meet minimum conditions (Regulation 883/2004). We have not confirmed the specific conditions for unemployment benefit. Bring your Greek insurance record to the Social Insurance Services and ask how it will count.

The bank sold me unemployment cover with my loan. How does it fit with the state benefit?

They are two separate things: the state benefit replaces part of your income, while loan cover usually pays the instalments for a limited number of months, after a waiting period. Read from when it pays, for how long, and what it excludes. Notify the insurer within the deadline in the policy.

Do I get redundancy money as well as unemployment benefit?

They are two different payments: redundancy pay is linked to your years in the job, unemployment benefit replaces part of your income while you look for work. Whether and how you can receive both we have not confirmed. Ask the Social Insurance Services or an employment lawyer before you sign anything.

When does unemployment benefit start being paid after I lose my job?

The benefit is paid from the 4th day of unemployment. How quickly the first payment arrives depends on the application and the documents, so apply straight away. For people who worked abroad for a Cypriot employer, the benefit starts from the 31st day.

I’m a third-country worker and lost my job. Can I claim unemployment benefit or must I leave?

Unemployment benefit has its own conditions of work, contributions and residence, and whether you can stay in Cyprus is set by your permit. Ask the Social Insurance Services about the benefit and the Civil Registry and Migration Department about the permit straight away. More in the article on workers from other countries.

I’ve lost my job — should I stop my life insurance to save money?

Not in a hurry. First ask about a smaller sum insured, a break in the savings part, or a paid-up option. A surrender in the early years usually returns less and may carry a tax clawback, and new cover later is judged on your age and health at that time. Ask for each option in writing.

Is unemployment benefit taxed?

We have not confirmed this for this article. Ask the Tax Department or your accountant how it is reported in your tax return.

I’m 62 and unemployed. Can I get unemployment benefit until my pension starts?

Unemployment benefit is paid up to 63, or up to 65 if you are not entitled to a pension, for up to 156 days at a time. From 63 there is an early pension reduced by 0.5% for each month before 65, if you meet the conditions. Ask the Services to look at both with you, so there is no gap.

Do I have to report to the employment office while on unemployment benefit?

Yes. You must be registered as a job seeker and available for work, and ISSA mentions reporting every six weeks. Ask how reporting is done today and note the dates; a missed appointment can delay payment.

Questions worth asking

  • Do I meet the contribution conditions, and whom do you count as my dependants?
  • Am I entitled to redundancy pay, and does it affect unemployment benefit?
  • Does the group scheme stay active, and until when can I continue it myself?
  • What does the loan’s unemployment cover pay, from when and for how many months?

What you can do from today

  • Register as a job seeker and apply for the benefit in the same week.
  • Ask your employer in writing for the termination certificate and what happens to the group schemes and the provident fund.
  • List the month’s fixed commitments (loans, rent, premiums) and talk to the bank before you miss an instalment.
  • Find the terms of any loan cover and note the notification deadlines.
  • Before you cut any policy, ask in writing for the alternatives and the cost of a surrender.

General information, not advice. State benefit amounts, rates and conditions change every year, and we give each figure with its source and year. For your own case, what the competent service confirms applies (for contribution-based benefits, the Social Insurance Services); for a private policy, the terms of your own policy.

Every policy has its own terms. What we write here is general information, not advice; for your own case, what your policy says applies, and it is worth confirming it in writing with your insurer.
